21st March 2009, Match
Report - Cyprus 8 - Bosnia 6
The squad
made its usual tour of Europe via Vienna to arrival in Sarajevo late
on Thursday night. They were met by an extremely friendly and
hospitable Bosnian guide - to be told the coach had broken down!
After a short wait the squad made its way to its base for the next
two days - Zenica, the heart of Bosnian Rugby, where the game was to
be played on Saturday Afternoon in one of the newly built athletic
and sporting complexes that the city boasts.
A number of squad training sessions had been organised by the
coaching staff, only to be curtailed by the extreme weather
conditions. Boosted by the arrival of Lawrence Macrides and George
Theodoulou directly from the UK, the squad was now complete and
ready to do battle.
Following a over-night snow storm there was initial doubt whether
the game would proceed but by kick off time, the snow had all but
cleared, however the temperature was a low 2 degrees C.
Following the usual tradition of anthems, the match kick off on
time. Early signs were good for the Cyprus team with early pressure
being applied in the break down for the Bosnians to concede an early
penalty, which was missed by Marcus Holden - not the best conditions
to take place kicks made worse by the unsavoury football-like chants
of the partisan crowd. Pressure continued to be applied with 50/50
ball been fought and won by the scavenging Cypriot back-row of Dan
McFarlane, AJ Pugh and Chris Thoma.
Late entry into a breakdown by the Bosnian blindside flanker led to
a blood injury to wing Andreas Zacharia but the penalty was once
again missed by Holden. Although foul play was suspected the referee
decided a stern reprimand would suffice. As the game continued the
Cypriot forwards, in particular the tight five, began to nominate
the set piece. The Bosnians left it until the half hour point to
enter the Cyprus 22. This time, Cyprus were guilty of slowing the
passage of play up and the resulting easy penalty was missed by the
Bosnian kicker who elected to take a hurried drop goal which when
wide.
The Cyprus team rallied and managed to push the Bosnians back into
their half, only for silly mistakes to be made which either
penalties or lost territory conceded. Their second excursion into
the Cypriot 22 added further pressure to the Cypriot team, which
eventually led to a Yellow Card being issued to Cypriot prop Christo
Kasabi for a professional foul. The resulting penalty was tapped by
the home team and wave after wave of attack was repelled. The first
half ended 0-0.
The second half saw a change of tactics by the Bosnians who elected
to start an aerial bombardment on the Cypriot back 3. However, well
rehearsed counter-attacking options were taken and slowly the game
start to swing back in the favour of the visitors. This was
short-lived as 2 quick successive penalty kicks took the home team
to a 6-0 lead. Shortly after this Marcus Holden found his kicking
boots to narrow the gap to 6-3. Dominance of both line-out and scrum
by the Cyprus forwards led to a scrum deep in the Bosnian half. A
pick-up by No 8 Chris Thoma, followed by quick interchange with
Scrum-half Dimitri Maratheftis led to the only try of the match,
with Chris Thoma crossing the line to take the Cypriots to an all
important lead.
The last 20 minutes were dominated by the Cyprus forwards applying
huge amounts of pressure at the set piece. Everything was going
forward with a further penalty conceded by the Home side which
failed to be converted. The defence held strong and despite attempts
by the slick Bosnian back they were unable to leave their own half.
Shortly afterwards the referee blown his whistle for the final time
- final score, Bosnia Herzegovina 6 - Cyprus 8.
Credit must go to every single player who was involved in this game,
to take victory from the league favourites in their own back garden
was an outstanding achievement. Every single member of the squad
richly deserves the result for all the sacrifices that they have
made to be there, they should be very proud of themselves, as Cyprus
should be of this exciting emerging sport.
The result means that Cyprus now sits at the top of European Nations
Cup Division 3D after its first round of games. Wining 4 from 4.
Focus now turns to the European Sevens Championships in Split and
Athens in late May. With a huge and dedicated effort by staff and
players alike, rugby in Cyprus is definitely on the up!!
Match Report: Cyprus vs
Slovakia
A perfect day for rugby saw Happy
Valley at Episkopi host the latest international game for the Cyprus
National Rugby Team, their opponents, Slovakia.
The start could not have been worse for the home side, when a try
was conceded within 4 minutes of the start. A wheeled scrum gave
advantage to the visitors who took the lead following a break
through the middle with an unfortunate miss tackle. The try was
converted.
The crowd were soon to be treated to a try at the other end of the
field from a well worked break by the Cyprus fly half Kyle Oelofse,
converted by Marcus Holden. As the Slovakian forwards settled into
the game they created pressure on the Cyprus defense and it was Kyle
Oelofse who was forced to make a try-saving tackle in the corner,
unfortunately, the referee considered it to be dangerous, giving the
Slovaks a penalty which they failed to convert.
Minutes later, Oelofse had to leave the field with a suspected
broken foot. His replacement, Tony Crassas was soon in action
putting out a pass that bounced before being recovered by Marcus
Holden to put Andreas Zacharia into space, who managed to outflank
the defense and score under the posts which was once again converted
by Holden. Ten minutes later continued pressure in the scrum managed
to create turn over ball for Cyprus which was passed to George
Agathocteous who powered through the midfield to score under the
posts. Half time score 21-7.
The second half started a little scrappy with neither side gaining
the upper hand, however centre Luke Peters made a break and managed
to push the score line to 28-7 after being converted again by
Holden.
With Cyprus ringing the changes through injury or substitution, it
took time to settle back down with further pressure being applied by
the Slovakian forwards. Defending hard, Cyprus kept the visitors at
bay but made too many errors in the scoring zone, making silly
mistakes or conceding penalties allowing the Slovaks time and
territory but they were unable to convert this into points.
However, in the dying moments of the game a beautiful weighted pass
from Colm O'Cleirigh put Luke Peters into space, who managed to
evade the oncoming defense and see him go over for his second try.
The try was not converted, which left the final score line of 33-7.
The victory has seen the team move to top slot in the Division with
the league favorites, Bosnia still to play away in Zenica on
Saturday 21 March 2009.
The CRF would like to thank all those involved in the organization
at Episkopi, for yet another first class job. Additionally, the
sponsors, Sports Direct and Lambouri Wines.
Cyprus National Rugby Team
takes on Slovakia in European Nations Cup – Cyprus Mail Saturday
14.3.09
By Nemanja Bjedov
The Cyprus National Rugby Team face Slovakia in the third game of
the European Nations Cup Division 3D at the Happy Valley pitch in
Episkopi this afternoon with the kick-off scheduled for 14:00.
This match follows two convincing victories, first over Azerbaijan
37-3 in late November 2008 at the BAKU Sports Academy Stadium and
then in early December over Monaco 24-3 in Happy Valley.
Loukis Pattihis, the president of the Cyprus Rugby Federation,
analyzed the potential formula for victory: “Slovakian forwards are
very big and physical and we are expecting a very hard game.
However, if our forwards manage to secure sufficient ball possession
then we firmly believe that our very talented and fast three-quarter
line could bring us the victory that we so cherish.”
“Should we beat Slovakia with 15 clear points then we travel to
Bosnia and Herzegovina as league leaders, which is an important
psychological advantage,” added Pattihis.
One week after this match the team will travel to Bosnia and
Herzegovina to take on the division leaders in Zenica.
Pattihis also expressed his gratitude to all parties that actually
helped Cyprus host Slovakia: “I wish to acknowledge the contribution
of our two sponsors SportsDirect.com and Lambouri Winery and also to
thank the Cyprus Sports Organization for granting permission for
this match to be played within the sovereign base area and of course
we graciously thank the SBA for hosting the match.”
The team manager of the national team, Theo Lenos, eagerly looks
forward for the game to kick-off: “The spirit among the players is
fantastic and even thou we expect a very difficult game we are
confident we can achieve the victory. Our players are so proud to
represent their country that they even paid from their own pockets
to travel to the away games due to the fact that Cyprus Sports
Organization’s subsidies are low at present.”
The ranking in Division 3D will consider the two seasons 2008-09 and
2009-10, with eight games played by each rugby union over the
two-season period. The division’s winner will directly qualify for
Division 3C for the seasons 2010-12. In case of two or more unions
with same number of points, the match points between tied teams will
be taken into consideration. Should this not determine the winner
then the difference of points for and against in the games between
the tied teams will be the next parameter to take into account.

It is with great pleasure that we can
announce to you that once again, Roland Wig of Lambouri Winery has
come forward and offered to supply us with wine for otr post-match
dinner with Slovakia on 14.3.09.

Cyprus to have its vineyards and wines organically certified by
Lacon and to carry the Bio-Siegel on its organic wine labels.

Match Report : Azerbaijan

15 hours
travel, 2 hours at immigration awaiting entry visas, 4 hours sleep,
poor accommodation and no real food to talk about - not the best
preparation for an international rugby match. However, this was the
reality of the first game of the season for The Moufflons - the
Cyprus National Rugby Team. Despite all the obstructions, Cyprus
came away victorious by 37 points to 3, in the European Nations Cup
Division 3D game against Azerbaijan in Baku on Saturday 29 November
2008.
The tone of the game was set when Cyprus started their intensive
warm up routine whilst the local players talk about the night before
and hastly prepared the pitch for the game. The norm of singing
national anthems prior to the game was dispensed with for some
unknown reason but an impromptu huddle heard the Moufflons sing
their anthem with great pride to the bemusement of the opposition.
The whistle blew, the game commenced and the next 10 minutes saw
wave after wave of Azeri forwards pounding the Cypriot defensive
line. The collisions in the contact area grew in intensity; each
wave of attack, saw each one snuffed out and slowly but surely they
were halted and pushed back. However, indiscipline by the defence
saw Azerbaijan take 2 penalty kicks at goal, one of which was
successful, 3-0 to the home side.
Quickly running out of options and with the tides turning, the home
side opted to kick for territory adding pressure to the Cyprus back
3, as the aerial bombardment continued a fumble saw the home side
awarded a scrum deep in the Cyprus 22. From the resultant pick-up by
the talented Azeri scrum half, he threw a wild pass that was
intercepted by Marcus Holden who sprinted the length of the field to
score under the posts, with the conversion taken, the score became
3-7. As the game continued, the Cyprus players gained in confidence
and started to string together the moves that they had been
practicing so hard for over previous days. A simple switch move in
the midfield from a line out saw centre Colm O'Cleirigh score in the
corner, unfortunately a little too far for the conversion, score 3 -
12 to the Moufflons.
This was to become a golden period for the visiting side with
numerous attacking breaks, frustrating the home side, who were
unable to cope with the pressure being placed upon them, conceding
numerous penalties in and around the breakdown. A converted penalty
by Marcus Holden saw the score creep to 3-15. Further pressure from
the Moufflons was to trigger a number of almost criminal physical
attacks on the Cypriot players. Paphos flanker Chris Thoma had his
cheek bone smashed by a stray elbow, which will rule him out for the
near future. Chris will require surgery to correct his smashed face,
his assailant went unnoticed. However, this triggered bigger and
better things from Cyprus, with further attacks covering all
channels of the pitch. A break by Marcus Holden, who drew the final
man, passed to Dan Thrasivoulou who sprinted into the corner to add
to the building score line which was converted leading to 3-22.
However, the game remained fragile, with the referee failing to
ascert the level of discipline required at International rugby;
another cowardly attack on prop Christo Kasabi saw him being kicked,
punched and pushed by the opposition. Unfortunately, the referee
took the easy option and only awarded the Azerbaijan Captain a
yellow card.
5 minutes later, wave after wave of Cypriot attack failed to be
thwarted by the home side and with a short burst to the line George
Agathocteous scored under the posts, again converted by Holden. This
was to be the final score of the half which finished Azerbaijan 3,
Cyprus 29.
The second half commenced and within minutes a nice combination
between the Maratheftis Brothers, Dimitri and Michael, saw the
latter break free from the defence and score in the corner. At this
stage the game was all but over, great leadership and decision
making from Captain and Man of the Match, Tony Thoma, coupled with
some excellent territorial kicking by fly half Kyle Oelofse
continued to pile the pressure on the home side who conceded a
number of penalties, all of which but one were missed. With
tiredness setting in and all replacements used, including an
impressive debut from Limassol Crusaders, 17 year old flanker, Marco
Mladenovic, the final whistle was blown. Final score, Azerbaijan 3 -
Cyprus 37.
This was an outstanding start to the new season, with some
particularly strong personal performances on show, it was great to
see that the sacrifices and hard work that had been put in by this
small "Band of Brothers" had reaped the rewards in the form of the
scoreline.
Following a gruelling return journey, the Moufflons must now recover
and prepare themselves for the next game against Monaco, which will
take place at Happy Valley on the Sovereign Base Area at Episkopi,
courtesy of the Commander British Forces on Saturday 6 December,
kick off at 2pm with all spectators welcome. Come and support the
Moufflons on their campaign to achieve first place in Division 3D.
Match Report: Monaco
6
December 2008, perfect conditions, an outstanding set up by the
British Forces and a large home crowd; Happy Valley, Episkopi was a
great venue for the second game over successive weekends involving
the Moufflons - the Cyprus National Rugby side. This time they faced
Monaco, a team they had beaten in last year's Division 3D tournament
by 19 points to 10.
Having recovered from their ordeal during the recent visit to
Azerbaijan, the home side took to the field looking to reward their
fans with a display of fast flowing rugby. However, the first half
failed to impress the crowd, bar a couple of attacking breaks, it
lacked any kind of spark. As the whistle blew to end the first half,
the score remained a disappointing 0-0. The half was littered with
stoppages in play; a yellow card compounded issues and with injuries
to prop Christo Kasabi and flanker Dan McFarlane, both having to be
replaced, just added to the woes of Cyprus as they failed to get "go
forward", falling foul of the referee's whistle far too many times.
With the words of the coach still ringing in their ears the home
side started to come to life and put pressure on the visitors. From
a scrappy line out, Vlad Muhaylon powered over the line to open the
scoring that was converted by Marcus Holden, 7-0 Cyprus. Minutes
later, pressure on the Monaco backline from centre Luke Peters
forced the turnover, quick hands were used to enable Colm O'Cleirigh
to go over in the corner. A injury to Colm from a late try-saving
tackle forced another change.
After some hard work, Monaco did manage to get a penalty within
kicking range, scoring 3 points in the process, this may have been
increased but the fly half failed to convert anymore of his kicks.
However, this could not stop the constant pressure being applied by
the now dominant Cyprus forwards. Following further slick moves and
counter attacking by the Cyprus backs, the ball was moved wide to
debutant AJ Pugh, who went over in the far corner. Moving towards
the end of the game, the Cyprus forwards struck again with a well
worked training ground move driving over the Monaco line, with Deano
Dean coming up with the ball. Converted by Holden the final score
was 24-3.
This ended a lot of hard work by players, management and coaching
staff in the first two games of the season. Cyprus are now in second
place in Division 3D with further games on 14 and 21 March 2009.
Slovakia will visit for the first game at a venue to be decided,
followed by the difficult away trip to league leaders, Bosnia, the
week after.

What the papers say; Cyprus
Mail on the morning of Saturday 6th September
The undefeated 15 a side Cyprus
International Rugby team is in Israel to challenge for promotion to
the next division in Europe . Having defeated all opposition in
their first season in Europe they are now in a position to displace
the Israelis and move into a stronger league. This offers
opportunities to participate in World Cup play-offs and see Cyprus
performing on the big rugby stage.
In the recently held European Sevens
competition Cyprus ran up against some of the giants of European
rugby such as Wales , Italy and Georgia, all fully professional
sides, and acquitted the field with distinction.
It was during this competition in
Georgia , that Cyprus lost their Sevens captain and play maker
Andrew Binikos, who shattered his leg in three places whilst playing
against Israel.
The team is now under the tutelage of
Paul Shanks, a top class coach with great experience of European
rugby having previously coached the distinguished United Services
side, a team that draws from all the British Military Services, and
plays opposition of the highest level. He formerly coached the Greek
national team and the Royal Air Force fifteen.
Sadly, once again, the most
successful international side Cyprus has ever produced will be self
funding, as KOA has no money to give them as it has all been spent
on trips to Beijing and our marvelous soccer clubs. Every member of
the team and the accompanying management (there’s a novelty), will
be paying their own expenses. What a disgrace.
Theodoros Lenos, the team manager
claims the squad, which has been in intense training, is in peak
condition and will give the very experienced Israelis a stern
challenge. Loukis Pattihis, the Federation president, who played
most of his rugby in the arctic wilds of Scotland , said ‘ at least
the weather wont be against us’
The game will take place on Saturday
at 6-30 in Tel Aviv, if any of our nationals are holidaying in
Israel get along and support the team.
Team to be selected from the
following:

care does not compare to what we are used to. It was a stressful 24
hours for everyone involved with the team, and our thanks must go to
all the players and management who pulled together and tried to make
Andrew as comfortable as possible.
The players, who under the enormous
stress the injury placed upon them, stayed with Andrew throughout
the whole ordeal.
Finally, we must congratulate all our
players, and coaching staff, for some thrilling performances in
Georgia. Spectacular victories over Georgia (ranked 13th in IRB
standings), Bulgaria (ranked 91st) and Israel (ranked 93rd) allowed
us to be placed 7th overall in the tournament. This is amazing when
you consider we only had 5 fit players for our last 2 games.
We can only wonder what we might have
achieved if we did not have the tragic loss and the ensuing
psychological state of mind.
Maybe the last word should go to the
Welsh (ranked 6th and eventual winners of the tournament) Team
Manager;
"Cyprus was the best team we faced in
the whole tournament. Only 2 teams managed to cross our line, and
Cyprus was one of them"
Cyprus Sevens Squad:
Andrew Binikos (c), Philippos Kyriacou, George Agathocleous, Tony
Crassas, Adam Kyriacou, Dan Thrasivoulou, Luke Peters, Panayiotis
Ioulianou, Chris Thoma, Andreas Zacharia.
Corfu Sevens

This competition took place in Corfu from the 20th - 21st Corfu.
Our results were;
Cyprus 0 Spain 34
Cyprus 7 Italy 7
Cyprus 49 Bulgaria 0
Cyprus 7 Greece 17
Cyprus 5 Bosnia 21
Cyprus 29 Luxembourg 0
With the injuries to Andy Binikos, Philippos Kyriakou took over as
captain, with Dino Markou drafted into the squad. With the events of
Georgia still very vivid, it was decided that the National Team
Coach would not travel as part of the official Cyprus team.
Further injuries to Chris Thoma, Panayiotis Ioulianou, Tony Crassas
weakened our squad, but again we finished in 7th place, which
overall was a great disappointment for all. The team had spirit and
courage, and all the players soldiered on despite carrying cuts,
bruises and swellings. Disappointing displays against Bosnia and
Greece, were forgotten with a truly remarkable draw against Italy,
and complete annihilation of Bulgaria and Luxembourg.
It is no small achievement for our young team, 5 of whom are under
20 years of age, to play 6 grueling international games of Rugby
sevens in the heat and humidity of Corfu in the middle of the
summer. Well done to all of them.
Costas Mastoroudes
praised at AGM FIRA AER in Corfu.
At the end of the FIRA AER AGM held in Corfu between 20th and 21st
June, the outgoing President of the CRF Costas Mastoroudes was
praised by Jean Claude Baque, President of FIRA AER, for his
contribution to Cyprus Rugby.
Anyone who has been involved with rugby in Cyprus, will know that
Costas is a rugby man through and through. He was one of the
pioneers of the CRF, and was influential in achieving full
membership status with FIRA.
We wish him and his wife Annie, all the very best in their
retirement from Cyprus Rugby.
Play Off with Israel
Our play off match for promotion to Division 3C has been officially
set for September 6th 2008 in Netaya in Israel.
Change of National
Team Manager
Niall Doherty and the CRF parted company, and the duties of National
Team Coach has now been taken by Paul Shanks. '"Shanksie" has been
involved with the CRF since the very first international against
Greece, and he has the full support and respect of all the players.

What the papers say;
Cyprus Mail August 1st 2008
When Cyprus was confirmed as the only undefeated rugby playing
nation in the world it was assumed that every Cypriot bank and
influential company would climb on board to share in their
international glory.
Well it made sense; lets face it where else would we achieve
recognition on the world circuit, after all we are only a nation of
800,000, which is about the same size as a provincial town in
Europe, and therefore not expected to lift our nose above pavement
level, and certainly not to ruffle the feathers of the European
rugby nations, who, after all, participate in major competitions
like the World Cup; Cyprus: where’s that.
As we well know, there are only two sports on our island, soccer and
basketball; these are performed by imported has-beens that cannot
find employment in their home countries and freakish giants that
have failed to make any impression on the own market. But in Cyprus
, where we slavishly pursue our Hellenic brethren, into whichever
cul-de-sac they may venture, regardless of our capacity to sustain
ourselves, we will follow.
How interesting, that for the first time in our history we can stand
alone against Greece . When we were challenged by Greece , that
turned out fully emblazoned in their Bank of Greece logos, and
Cyprus appeared in tee-shirts borrowed from a local taverna, to play
against them in the Independence Cup, wasn’t it extraordinary that
their lowly cousin would completely destroy them-39-3.
Following this, Cyprus went on to beat every team in their European
division until they were confronted with the prospect of promotion
to the league above them that meant playing against the bottom team
Israel to replace them in the next division which opens up the
possibility of playing in the World Cup watched by a television
audience of 300 million world wide; but would this interest anyone
in Cyprus, when they can watch the delightful skills of our local
soccer teams that wouldn’t merit a place in Sunday leagues on
Hackney Marshes. Certainly not.
Millions of euros of taxpayers money are given every year to the
share-holders of our major soccer clubs to be dissipated on the
salaries of non-entities that never had the ability to lace up the
boots of Nobby Stiles or Bobby Moore, but the executive of KOA, the
governing body that dispenses public money to our sporting
federations, thinks that this is money well spent as it keeps their
political masters happy. Shame on them.
If Cyprus, a completely amateur side, whose overseas players pay
their own way for the honour of representing their country, cannot
source the expenses for their transport and accommodation to Israel
, they are destined to be locked in the lower divisions without any
chance of progressing. Greece provides over 300,000 euros a year
plus expenses for their rugby team, and some of the sides that
Cyprus beat in the European division of the World Cup Sevens, such
as Georgia and Bulgaria ( and don’t forget they drew with Italy ),
are fully professional teams, which means that the Cypriots are
totally disadvantaged.
The play-off against Israel is due in September, but if we don’t
challenge them, they stay in that division and have access to World
Cup rugby, whilst we languish in the bottom league with Azerbaijan ,
Monaco and Slovakia , teams we have already beaten.
The president of the Cyprus Rugby Federation, the enormously
committed, Loukis Pattihis, has made numerous phone calls and sent
three emails to the Chairman of KOA in the last three weeks, in a
desperate attempt to secure finances for the trip, but they haven’t
even had the decency to reply.
We know that emerging sports take time to penetrate the
institutional psyche, and one only has to look at the treatment of
Marcos Bagdadis to comprehend my meaning, but the tavlis players
that make up the board of KOA really need to open their tiny minds
to discover that there is more than football out there. Can they be
aware that the Olympic Committee has asked the Cyprus Rugby
Federation to host a rugby competition during the Small Nations
Games next year? I seriously doubt it.
Wake up KOA, before you become a laughing stock.
New CRF Development
Officer
The CRF announces the appointment of Lavrendios Vassiliades as the
new Development Officer. Lawrence as he is known to all within the
rugby circles, was born in Nicosia 31 years ago, and learnt the game
of rugby whilst studying at Plymouth University. On his return from
his studies, Lawrence started working for the Ministry of
Agriculture as a Fisheries and Marine Officer, and he started
playing for the Limassol Crusaders where he won his first
International Cap against Greece in March 2007.
That same year Lawrence took part in the FIRA sponsored coaching
course Part 1, and he moved to the Nicosia Barbarians, where he is
currently the club Secretary. Injury during training for the 3D
tournament kept him out of the squad for those games, and
regrettably, a shoulder injury kept him out of the Israel game.
Lawrence is married to Joanna, who unselfishly organized the 2 very
successful International matches held in Nicosia during the 3D
tournament. They have 2 children, Eleftheria and Vasili.

Sponsorship
opportunities and Friends of Cyprus Rugby scheme
The Cyprus Rugby Federation have successfully hosted the European
Rugby League Division 3D here in Cyprus, with participating
countries being Azerbaijan, Monaco, Slovakia and Cyprus. We won the
tournament, and in September, we will be involved in a play off,
possibly against Finland, for promotion to Division 3C. Should we
win this match, and we intend to, then we will have to play another
5 international matches, both home and away, before April 2009 .
All our matches to date have been well attended and we have had
excellent exposure in the media both here and abroad.
In June we are taking part in the World 7's qualifying rounds in
Georgia and in Greece.
We have done all this with very little if any funding from the
Cyprus Sports Organization.
The Cyprus Rugby Federation is a winner, as The Cyprus Rugby
Federation (CRF) is the only undefeated international team in the
world, where we have played 4 test matches and won them all
convincingly.
If you want to know more about sponsorship opportunities please
contact our Secretary Johny Stavrinou on 99-811412
Friends of Rugby
The Friends of Rugby is in essence, a donation scheme, whereby we
can approach almost anyone, or any company and ask for a sum of Euro
1000. (more if they wish). This money will be used to help the CRF
with its Development Plans to promote the sport of Rugby in Cyprus.
The theory behind this scheme, is that a company would more easily
part with this relatively minimal sum, than pay the larger amounts
we are looking for from a major sponsor.
So what do they get for their Euro 1000?
1. 4 free tickets to all our home international matches until the
end of 2008
2. Free link to their company on our web site.
3. Free mention in our sponsors page for printed programme made for
our home internationals in 2008
4. Their name on any banner we make mentioning all our sponsors at
our international matches
5. 50 % reduction in rates on advertising in our programme valid
only for full page adverts
6. Invitation to all our press conferences and promotional
activities
7. A picture of the presentation of the CRF Friends of Rugby
Certificate to the individual sponsor will appear on our website.
8. We will invite all our Friends of Rugby to have their picture
taken together and have this published in the newspapers
9. 4 free tickets to our CRF gala dinner to be held before the end
of 2008

World Cup 7's-
European Qualifying Rounds- Georgia and Corfu
Nial Doherty, the Cyprus National Coach, has just announced the
squad of players who will represent Cyprus in their first ever
International tournament at this level.
The tournament takes place in Georgia between the 7th -8th June, and
pits our boys against the mighty and experienced Welsh and Georgian
teams, both of whom are professional. Other teams in our section are
Moldova, Ukraine, Israel, Bulgaria, Latvia, Greece and Azerbaijan.
"I believe the Sevens game is a crucial part of the development of
the game of rugby especially here in Cyprus itself," Nial said when
being interviewed by Planet Rugby.
(you can read the full article on
http://www.planetrugby.com/Story/0,18259,3551_3591642,00.html
"Regarding the tournament, we are very pleased to be playing against
top international teams as it will give us an idea as to where
exactly we fit in terms of skills and technical ability against the
different standards in European rugby.
"To compete on a regular basis on the IRB Sevens circuit is of our
main objectives for Cyprus Rugby," he added.
Cyprus Sevens Squad:
Andrew Binikos (c), Philippos Kyriacou, George Agathocleous, Tony
Crassas, Adam Kyriacou, Dan Thrasivoulou, Luke Peters, Panayiotis
Ioulianou, Chris Thoma, Andreas Zacharia.
Niall has called upon Mark Walpyof, an extremely experienced 7's
coach who has coached at the very highest level. e.g The Welsh
International 7 side, and is at present the backs coach of the
powerful club London Welsh XV.
''We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Marks's experience
assisting us in our preparation'' Niall said.
"And I believe we will surprise one or two people."
Cyprus will also take part in the second European Qualifying round
to be held in Corfu between the 20th - 21st June

Cyprus Mail Saturday 19th April 2008
RUGBY UPDATE 2008.
Following the 2007 success of the Cyprus International Rugby Team
when they defeated all opposition and still remain the only
undefeated side in International Rugby, the country now enters the
uncertainty of performing on the European stage with a minimum of
financial support from the government, being awarded only 11,000
euros to fund all international competitions. As a result of this,
their activities will be severely curtailed unless they are able to
find a major sponsor; the Cyprus Rugby Federation, whilst accepting
the allocation of funds from KOA (Cyprus Sports Organisation),
believe they merit a greater contribution, but in a country that is
in thrall to soccer, no matter how poorly performed, it seems
inevitable.
In an effort to improve their finances, Loukis Pattihis,
Vice-President, has evolved a scheme which he believes will improve
the fortunes of the national side and allow them to compete on more
equal terms with the opposition. He has introduced The Friends of
Cyprus Rugby, whereby, for a modest contribution of 1000 euros, an
individual or organization, can become an essential part of Cyprus
Rugby development. All donors will receive four free tickets to all
internationals, inclusion on the web-site, reductions in company
advertising, attendance at celebration dinners, and, access to, and
photo opportunities, with our international players.
In June, Cyprus are scheduled to participate in the European
division of the Rugby World Cup Seven’s Competition, to be held in
Corfu . This is rugby on speed; it involves teams of seven players,
competing for fourteen minutes with a minute break in between, with
scrums of three players and four backs. All involved are selected
for their speed and ability to defend. According to those European
officials, that have witnessed our national side in performance,
Cyprus is considered the ‘dark horse’ of the competition.
This is a major European sporting event and will attract a large
television audience. Cyprus will be competing with the very best
European sides, including England , France , Ireland , Scotland ,
Italy and all other European rugby playing nations. Due to lack of
funding Cyprus has had to withdraw from two major international
events this year, but all can be redeemed, if we can provide our
players with sufficient funding to perform at their very best.
The senior European sides are all professionals and supported by
their home unions to the tune of millions, even Greece give their
national side, 300, 000 euros annually. Our overseas players pay all
their own expenses for the honour of playing for our country.
Next year, Cyprus will play host to the Small Nations Games, which
will include Rugby Seven’s, a game that many countries want included
in the Olympic Games. What an opportunity for a small investor to
exploit. However, what our country needs is for the big companies to
get on board, and now is the moment; don’t miss out.
CRF Hosts IRB Level 2
Coaching Course and Level 1 Referees Course.
May marked the conclusion of the International Rugby Board’s
advanced training scheme for officials and coaches. The course was
held at Episkopi, under the aegis of the Cyprus Rugby Federation,
and well attended by existing and aspirant referees and trainers
anxious to benefit from the latest coaching techniques, and to be
brought up to date on changes to the laws of the game; the
Federation was extremely pleased to welcome two participants from
Greece, which made it a truly regional event.
The course was conducted by Simon Jones, one of Britain’s top
trainers and an iconic figure in English West Country rugby. Mr.
Jones was a member of the all conquering Bath side that dominated
British and European rugby in the 80’s, making over 150 appearances
in the back row for the club. He started his career in Plymouth and
after making regular appearances for Devon county moved on to Bath
and Somerset, picking up many representative honours; trialing for
England; playing for the Barbarians, and achieving the distinct
accolade of playing against the All Blacks when they challenged
South Western Counties.
Passing easily into the era of professional rugby he played in a
number of countries but still found time to complete his Master’s
degree in education, and settling into the teaching profession in
Southern England. Now, one of the International Rugby Board’s top
coaches, he travels the world advising and educating on the latest
developments in the game. When asked to comment on the level and
standard of Cypriot and Greek coaches and officials, he said’ I am
most impressed with the degree of enthusiasm displayed throughout
the course and encouraged by the progress we have made; it has been
a real pleasure’. This was his first visit to our country but
judging by his response, it won’t be his last.

Loukis Pattihis, Vice-President of the Cyprus Federation, said’ If
the International Rugby Board are going to send us trainers of the
quality of Simon Jones, then I am convinced we will improve rapidly,
and though we are a small country, we will make our mark on European
rugby’.
The IRB Level 1 Referees Course educated 22 players, coaches and
Referee hopefuls in Episkopi. The course was run by Mr. Colin Brett,
The Referee Development Manager in Edinburgh of the Scottish Rugby
Union.

CRF achieves Full
Membership to FIRA AER
At the Annual General Meeting of FIRA AER which was held in Paris
from 28.11.07 until 1.12.07, it was unanimously agreed that the
Cyprus Rugby Federation would be accepted as a Full Member.
This is a remarkable achievement for the CRF, considering we applied
to become members in December 2006, and we were granted the status
of Affiliated Associate Member of FIRA AER.
Since then, The CRF have hosted an Under 17 Development camp in
August 2007 with participation from Greece, and in October 2007 we
hosted the 3D European Rugby Tournament League with participating
countries from Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Monaco, and Slovakia.
The President of FIRA AER, Mr. Jean Claude Baque, congratulated
Cyprus on their achievements so far, and praised the CRF for hosting
such an important International Tournament so soon after
affiliation, and also for winning.
Praise should go to Costas Mastoroudes, President of the CRF, and
all his committee members who have worked so hard over the past 2
years. He went on to say “We have made Cyprus proud and we have
achieved very much with our positive participation and results on
the field.
The World has taken notice of our achievement in such a short
period.
We belong and serve the World of Rugby we are servants of the game
and most importantly the players on the field.
Please do not allow our standards to drop.. you are the people that
deserve the praise that worked so hard with passion for the game.
I Thank you.
Let us go forward..''

Rugby Crisis.
Following the extraordinary success of our national side, unbeaten
in all their international matches, the European Rugby Federation
invited our junior team to enter the European Championships to be
played in Treviso in Italy in March this year, which would have seen
our juniors competing against the best young players from England,
Wales, Ireland and the other European teams.
In normal circumstances this would be a cause for celebration in our
sporting circles, however; even though the junior players, drawn
from Paphos, Limassol and Nicosia , had each offered to contribute
450 euros towards the expense of the tour they fell 7000 euros short
of the total cost. All appeals to Cyprus Sports Organisation have
fallen on deaf ears and although the mighty Paphos Tigers Rugby Club
had arranged a number of fund raising activities they failed to
achieve the total required.
As a consequence, the Cyprus Rugby Federation has informed their
parent body, the European Federation; that Cyprus , with great
regret, will have to withdraw from the competition. This competition
has European wide television coverage and would have given our
international juniors an opportunity to play against the best in the
world.
In a country where millions are spent on maintaining our miserable
mediocre soccer teams, distinguished for little else but violence
and anti-social behaviour, it is a tragedy that our most successful
international sportsmen are denied a chance to show the world what
we are capable of; make no mistake, the future of any sport depends
on the emerging young players, and we have denied our rugby youth a
magnificent opportunity to excel, because our government would
rather give millions to our discredited soccer clubs, than grant a
few euros to a sport that is universally celebrated for its
standards of sportsmanship.
If you think things could not get much worse in our rugby world,
consider this; because of the recalcitrant attitude of K.O.A. and
the dismal lack of sponsorship, Cyprus International Federation has
had to withdraw from the Independence Cup, an annual competition
played against Greece, which Cyprus holds, having beaten Greece 39-3
last year; they cannot afford the cost of traveling to Greece where
the competition would be held in March; furthermore, we have had to
decline our invitation to appear in the European Rugby Sevens
competition, for the same reasons.
Many of you will not be aware that we are the only undefeated rugby
playing nation in the world, but I suppose you hadn’t heard of
Marcos Baghdadis until he emerged on the world stage. Q.E.D.
Alexander McCowan.
Under 18 European
Championship
The CRF under 18's will be participating in the European
Championships which will take place in Treviso, in Italy from 14th
to 23rd of March 2008.
Our youths, who participated in our Under 17 Development camp in
August, will now have the chance to compete against the likes of
Croatia, Luxembourg and Norway in Group D.
Technical Director Niall Doherty, has appointed Gary Thomson as
Manager, who will be busy arranging for sponsorship to cover the
heavy expenses, and all travel arrangements.
Niall will also be assisted by his trusted right hand Paul Shanks on
the coaching side.
Further details will be posted later.
Sevens World
Qualifying Tournaments.
The schedule for the World Mens Sevens Tournament to be held in
Hanover Germany between the 12th and 13th July 2008 was made public
during the Annual General Meeting of FIRA AER in Paris on 30.11.07.
The European section of the tournament involves seven qualifying
tournament around Europe, and each team has to take part in 2 such
tournaments. Eleven countries with the most points will join hosts
Germany in the finals. The top 5 teams from the finals in Germany
will then go forward to the World Sevens tournament held in Dubai.
Cyprus has been seeded at number 33, and will compete in 2
qualifying tournaments.
The first takes place in Tbilisi in Georgia between the 7th and 8th
June 2008. We will be playing against Moldova, Wales, Georgia,
Ukraine, Latvia, Israel, Bulgaria, Greece, and Azerbaijan.
The second qualifying tournament takes place 2 weeks later in Porto
Carras in Greece from the 21st until the 22nd June 2008. Cyprus will
test themselves against Spain, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Bulgaria,
Greece, Luxembourg, and Bosnia Herzegovina.
Technical Director Niall Doherty is busy formulating his team of
managers and trainers, and the logistics involved in such a
geographically challenging tournament is immense. The financial
burden on the CRF is horrendous, and we actively request the support
of all rugby lovers to our cause, because the whispers around the
corridors of European Rugby is that ''Cyprus might be a wild card
team''.

FIRA AER Group 3C
Play Off
Following the magnificent performances by our national team in
winning the 3D tournament so convincingly, the dates for the 3C Play
Off has now been set for the 14th June 2008. Though the date has
been settled, our opponents and venue are still unknown to us, but
it appears to be between either Finland or Israel. The match between
these two teams takes place in the new year and is a real relegation
decider. Coach Niall Doherty hopes to be present at the match to
appraise the strengths and weaknesses of both teams.
One thing is sure however, that the first 3 weeks of June will be a
most trying time for our International Teams. With the Sevens team
flying to Georgia on the 7th, the 3C play offs either in Israel,
Finland or even Cyprus on the 14th, and finally the second Sevens
tournament in Greece on the 21st, this will be a testing period for
all concerned with rugby on the island.
Special tribute must be given to the future Mrs. Tony Thoma, the
fiancé of our vice captain. Like all young ladies, she was looking
forward to her wedding to Tony on the 14th June 2008. However this
date now clashes with the 3C Play Off, so our young lovers have
decided to ''convert their try'' at a later date. Now there is
commitment for you.
3D Tournament
28/10/2007 – 03/11/2007
Match Report
Cyprus v Slovakia
03/11/2007
Final Score: Cyprus 38 – Slovakia 8
CYPRUS DECLARED TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS
UNDER A virtually cloudless sunny sky with just enough breeze to
flutter the national flags, Cyprus won the FIRA AER European Rugby
League Division 3D Rugby League Tournament providing a sound 38-8
winning display against Slovakia in front of an enthusiastic
near-1000 crowd at the Kiniras Sport Centre, Geriskipou on Saturday
(November 3).
As expected, with both sides
unbeaten, the game started at a fast and furious pace and it seemed
that it wouldn’t be long before points appeared on the board.
Slovakia had the first opportunity but missed what seemed like an
easy penalty kick for handling on the ground.
The first break came on 13 minutes
when centre-back, George Agathocleous (Paphos Tigers), broke on the
right and scored a try under the posts, which Tony Crassas(Paphos
Tigers) converted to give Cyprus a 7-0 lead.
This led to a period of Cyprus
domination with some flowing passing movements and attacks on the
Slovakian line. To their credit Slovakia defended well having quite
a heavy pack and back division.
Cyprus gained a scrummage at 10 metres out and a movement started by
Andy Binikos(Currie, Edinburgh), without a doubt one of the best
players on the park, ended with centre-back, Panayiotis Ioulianou
(Epsom & Cheam), dropping over for another try. Crassas then showed
his ability at kicking by taking a very angled conversion kick
‘Wilko-style’ to make the score 14-0 to Cyprus.
It was not all one-sided as Slovakia
used their weight advantage to good effect and had several attempts
thwarted on the line. They were extremely good in lineouts and won a
number of scrums encounters against the head.
With just enough time left for him to
return before half-time, Chris Thoma (Paphos Tigers), was sin-binned
for a physical argument with a Slovakian player and Cyprus were
reduced to 14-men.
The last try of the half in the 32nd
minute had that element of luck and good enthusiastic running about
it. Binikos kicked well ahead from inside the Cyprus half and haring
after the ball managed a second kick which conveniently landed over
the Slovakia line in the corner and Binikos dropped on it to score
his second try of the half. This time Crassas failed in his effort
to convert to leave the score at 19-0 to Cyprus at half-time.
Half-Time: Cyprus 19pts, Slovakia 0
Just three minutes into the second-half, Cyprus were penalised for
‘holding-down’ in a tackle and Slovakian winger, Cmiel Martin, had a
an easy task to fire over between the posts for three points (19-3).
This brought about a period of
pressure from Slovakia and they scored a hard-worked try in the
corner after some good running by fly-half, Nosko Roman, after six
minutes, which wasn’t converted.
But now Slovakia were only 19-8 down
and looking dangerous.
However, Cyprus crowd favourite
‘Deano’ (Warren Dean of Paphos Tigers) passed neatly to George
Agathocleous (Paphos Tigers), who made one of his dazzling runs
before passing to Binikos to score a try in the corner after 49
minutes, which wasn’t converted.
Leading 24-8, Cyprus began to
emphasise their passing skills and Crassas proved that he wasn’t
just a good kicker by going over for a try between the posts two
minutes later and finishing the movement off by converting to make
the score, 31-8.
The extreme heat and physical
endeavours by both sides saw many changes with players coming and
going at regular intervals without seemingly disrupting the play.
The best of the tries came in the
67th minute when, after a flowing three-quarter movement involving
Tony Thoma (Paphos Tigers) and Binikos, Agathocleous, had a
brilliant take and cut through the Slovakian defence to score a
great try under the posts. Crassas converted to bring the scoreline
up to 38-8.
When crowd favourite ‘Deana’ came off
to the usual chant of ‘Deano’ – ‘Deano’ he had given his all and was
a vital cog in the victory as was back-row forward, Calm O’Cleirigh
(Bective Rangers).
The remainder of the match saw a lot of effort from both sides but
they were obviously tiring and tempers flared slightly in one
‘hand-bagging’ incident in a game that had been played in a very
sporting manner.
One of the many Cyprus stars, Tony
Crassos, sustained a wrist injury in the dying minutes of the match
that, in the main, had not kept the physios too busy.
The Cyprus team having beaten
Azerbaijan 29-0 at the Pafiakos Stadium and Monaco (19-10) in the
Makarios Stadium at Nicosia, claimed the tournament after this
thrilling victory over Slovakia and now get the chance to play
either Finland or Israel for a step up a division in the world
leagues.
It was a great team performance and does all credit to head coach,
Niall Doherty, and his team. The man-of-the-series award went to
Andrew Binikos, the man-of-the –match award to George Agathocleous.
In the other game, which was for third and fourth places, the strong
Monaco team proved too much for Azerbaijan beating them 41-3.

Match Report

Cyprus select v Monaco
Final Score: Cyprus 19 - Monaco 10
The second match in the European Rugby League Division 3D kicked off
at 8.00 pm at the Makarios Stadium in Nicosia in front of a
passionate crowd of rugby fans.
This was the first international
rugby match Cyprus has played in our capital city at the Makarios
stadium and the first Cypriot international rugby match played under
lights.
The teams were introduced to His
Excellence, Nicholas Galey, The Ambassador of France, and
accompanying him was Mr. Damianos Hadjidamianou representing the
Cyprus Olympic committee. There was a distinct lack of
representation from the Cyprus Sports organization, yet again.
Coach Niall Doherty, was forced to make up to 8 changes and to use
his squad players due to the many little injuries picked up in our
first match against Azerbaijan, only 3 days previously. The most
serious injury of all was the tragic loss of our captain and
talisman, Jonathan Pettemerides, who tragically tore his cruciate
ligament in his knee, and will be sidelined for at least a year. We
hope Jonathan takes heart from the support he has received from
everyone associated with the C.R.F., and we wish him a full and
speedy recovery.
The team was now led by our Vice
Captain, Tony Thoma, whose determined face was mirrored by the whole
of the team.
Both teams showed nerves in the first
10 minutes but after exerting some good pressure, we drew fist
blood. Fifteen minutes into the game and after good pressing by the
pack, the ball came back to the three quarters, and centre George
Agathocleous sped over the line for a fine try. The conversion from
Tony Thoma was good, and to the raptors joy of the crowd, we found
ourselves 7 – 0 up.
Monaco, were not about to become
innocent bystanders in this game, and their speedy backs began to
cause us some problems, all of which we coped with admirably. We
only managed to hold on to our lead for 10 minutes before the Monaco
pack drove to our line and scored a try through Davide Pozzati. The
scorer converted his own try, so we were equalite once again at 7 –
7.
On the half hour mark whilst defending near their own 22, an
infringement in the scrum by one of the Monaco players gave Cyprus a
chance to take the lead. Tony Thoma again stepped up to take the
penalty and made no mistake. So we were back in the lead again
though a very slender one at 10-7.
The game was fast and competitive and
no quarter was given by either side. It was Monaco who finished the
scoring in the first half with a great drop goal by their no
10.Davide Pozzati, and we were again back to square one with the
score at 10-10.
The second half saw both teams play
some excellent rugby with the Monaco team having the upper hand in
the backline managing to gain valuable ground on a regular basis,
but the Cyprus defence and tackling was fierce and managed to close
down any threat that this presented.
This good defensive play kept the
scoring down in the second half. The ball was with the backs most of
the second half so we saw lots of kicking for position and open
play. There were many breaks through the centre but the Cyprus
defence and tackling was fierce and managed to close down any threat
that this presented.
As the game wore on it appeared that
we were physically stronger and that Monaco showed signs of
tiredness. The game turned on a series of mistakes in the Monaco
back line that allowed Cyprus to convert 2 penalty kicks through
Tony Thoma to increase our lead to 16-10.
Monaco tried to counter and with less
than 5 minutes to play with a series of half breaks which brought
increased pressure on our 5 metre line. At times it looked that
their forwards would break through our defence and win the match,
but we stood firm. A penalty in our favour gave the opportunity to
our fly half Andrew Binikos to use his boot to clear our lines, and
he brought play up to the Monaco 22 yard line. From the resultant
scramble, Monaco were again penalized, and up stepped the quite
magnificent Tony Thoma, who coolly put the ball squarely between the
posts to put us out of reach of the opposition.
The referee immediately blew for the
end of the game and we deservedly won a very hard fought match.
Final score Cyprus select19 Monaco

We now look forward to the vitally
important top of the table clash with Slovakia, and our weary
warriors have only 2 days to rest their sore limbs.
We wish them well.

Match Report
Cyprus v Azerbaijan
28/11/2007
Final Score: Cyprus 29 - Azerbaijan 0
The first match of the 3D tournament kicked off at 2.00 pm at the
Paphiakos Stadium in Paphos in front of a passionate crowd of over a
thousand rugby fans.
For everyone involved with this
tournament, from the Cyprus Rugby Federation (CRF), to the many
rugby loving volunteers, right through to our couch Niall Doherty,
his coaching staff, and to the players themselves, the day of
reckoning had arrived. All the months of hard work from behind the
scenes, was now to be put to the test on the rugby field.
It was the Azerbaijanis who started
more positively, and it was obvious that the Cypriot lads were a
little nervous. After a period of sustained pressure by the powerful
visiting forwards, our prop, in an effort to stop the marauding
Azerbaijani forwards from progressing deeper into our 22 metre line,
was caught offside on 2 occasions. Fortunately for us the diminutive
and talented Azerbaijani number 10 could not take advantage of the
resulting penalty kicks to give his team the lead that, at that
time, they so richly deserved.
Spurred on by a highly vocal local
crowd, the Cypriot team rallied, and managed to take more control of
the game. Realizing that the visiting forwards, were strong and
organized, the Cyprus captain, Johnathan Pettemerides started
bringing his fast and talented back line more into the game. After
about 12 minutes, a fluid handling move that cut right through the
centre of the Azrbaijani defence saw our Full back Tony Crassas
involved in a dummy inside break to score our first try of the
match. His successful conversion added another 2 points to the
Cypriot tally. A seven point lead to our team so early in the match
was just what our coaches were hoping for.
Within a few minutes a further 3 points was added to the score by
Tony Crassas when he converted a penalty after an infringement by
the Azerbaijani team in front of their posts.
Despite the superior strength and technique of the Azerbaijani
forwards, the Cyprus back line managed to break through the defence
again resulting in a second try being scored by Andrew Binikos which
was converted by Tony Crassas, giving Cyprus a 17 point lead.
At this point we were completely
dominating the game. Our forwards were matching their more powerful
opponents in every department. Our back line ably controlled by our
stand off half Andrew Binikos, was instrumental in generating
opportunities for the back line via some imaginative and astute
passing to his centres, together with some expert place kicking into
the open spaces left by the Azerbaijani defence.
The team grew in confidence and
continued to play some very fast open rugby which apart from
exciting their coach, enthralled their supporters. Every break was
accompanied by massive shouts of encouragement, and each point
scored was vigorously applauded and appreciated.
We were creating many opportunities and deservedly went further into
the lead some minutes later with a try by our elusive centre Colm O’
Cleirigh after some impressive team work and passing. His theatrical
dive over the line was equally as impressive. Tony Crassas converted
to give us a 24 point lead.
There was very little resistance at
this point, and we were completely dominant. Just before half time
we scored the best try of the afternoon. A fast flowing handling
movement with slick interpassing between 4 of our players,
eventually let our back row forward from Richmond RFC, Phillipos
Kyriakou to break through the Azerbaijani defence once more, to
score a most impressive try, bringing the half time score to 29 – 0
in favour of Cyprus.
Unfortunately, the second half did
not live up to the heights of the first. The game became a contest
that was played mainly in the centre of the park. There were no
decisive breaks that gave either side a territorial advantage. The
Cyprus team then started a series of forced substitutions due to
injury with the most serious occurring to our courageous captain,
who was regretfully stretchered off with a knee injury 15 minutes
from time, and is now out for the rest of the tournament. This
seemed to have a detrimental effect to the overall cohesion of the
side, and we were just not firing on all cylinders. We were also
guilty of persistent fouling and had our lock forward Warren Deane
sin binned midway through the half. It is to our team’s credit, that
even with a man down we did not allow the opposition to take
advantage.
Despite there being no further scores
in the second half, there was some impressive rugby shown by both
teams, with superb defence and tackling preventing any breakaway
tries.
Both teams played some excellent
rugby with the Azerbaijan team having the upper hand in the scrums
and loose mauls managing to gain valuable ground on a regular basis,
but the Cyprus defence and tackling was fierce and managed to close
down any threat that this presented. It was the superior passing and
running skills of the back line together with the unfailing defence
by the forwards that gave Cyprus this valuable victory.
Our coach Niall Doherty, and all his
coaching and backroom staff, must be applauded for the tremendous
work they have done on the team. Their spirit, and their
determination was there for all to see. These boys are proud to
represent their country, and the mere fact that they sang the
national anthem with such vigour that they even managed to drown out
the official singer to prove their point.
The team will now have to regroup
themselves and play on without their influential captain. With the
spirit around the squad, I am sure they will overcome this loss.
This was Cyprus’ second international match and we go forward with a
100% record; long may it continue.

CRF gets ready for
Nicosia’s New Rugby Club - Nicosia Harlequins RFC
The CRF are happy to announce that a new club has been formed in
Nicosia, called the Nicosia Harlequins.
Mr. Christo Andreou, their President,
sent an email to the CRF to announce that they now have their
registration as a club from the Nicosia Local Council. They now
request to become full members of the CRF.
The CRF President, Mr. Costas
Mastoroudes, sent a congratulatory email to the Harlequins, and
pointed out that, in accordance with our constitution, before the
Harlequins could be officially accepted into the CRF, they first had
to be approved by the highest sporting authority in Cyprus, The
Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA). Once all the necessary documents
are in place with KOA, the application thereafter to join the CRF is
a mere formality of filling some forms.
''Take heart Harlequins, the hard part is over'' said Mr.
Mastoroudes.
CRF Issues
International Tournament Press Release
This is our World Cup
Mr. Costas Mastoroudes, President of the Cyprus Rugby Federation (CRF),
said
’’Now that the Rugby World Cup had finished in France with victory
going to South Africa, the Cyprus national Rugby team is taking part
in its own World Cup.''
Mr. Mastoroudes was speaking at a press conference held by CRF to
announce the games to be played for the European Rugby Federation (FIRA
AER) league 3D to be played here in Cyprus at the end of October.
The teams taking part are Azerbaijan, Monaco, Slovakia and Cyprus.
The complete list of fixtures is:
28.10.07 Sunday - Paphiako Stadium, Paphos Cyprus v
Azerbaijan 14.00
31.10.07 Wednesday - Makarios Stadium Nicosia Azerbaijan v Slovakia
18.00
31.10.07 Wednesday - Makarios Stadium Nicosia Cyprus XV v Monaco
20.00
3.11.07 Saturday - Kiniras Geroskipou, Paphos Azerbaijan v Monaco
11.00
3.11.07 Saturday - Kiniras Geroskipou, Paphos Cyprus v Slovakia
14.00
Mr. Mastoroudes went on to say that FIRA AER asked all 4 teams to
play this tournament in the space of one week. The winner would then
take part in a play off against the bottom team of division 3C, with
the eventual victor playing in the stronger division as from2008.
''This is a wonderful challenge for us'' said Mr. Mastoroudes. ''
not only has FIRA AER shown their confidence in us to organize such
a prestigious competition so soon after joining the European Family
of Rugby in December 2006, but it also allows us to show rugby games
at an International level to the people of Cyprus. This will most
definitely help our development''
Mr. Mastoroudes gave a brief history of the development of rugby in
Cyprus over the years. Traditionally it was the exclusive domain of
the English military within the sovereign base areas of Dhekelia,
Episkopi and Akrotiri who would play amongst themselves in their own
league.
It was in 2003 /4 that 3 local Cypriot teams based in Paphos,
Limassol and Nicosia were formed, spurned on by the enthusiasm and
energy of Cypriot ex patriots from South Africa, The UK and other
major playing countries. These men were fanatical about the game and
were determined to form their own league here in Cyprus. The Cyprus
Rugby federation was formed and eventually recognized by the Cyprus
Sports Organization (KOA) in May 2006. From then on things started
to happen very quickly and Cyprus was accepted as the 43rd member of
FIRA AER in December 2006.
''To celebrate this momentous occasion'' Mr. Mastoroudes went on to
say, '' Cyprus invited the very powerful Greek National Rugby XV to
play its inaugural match in Paphos In March 2007, and we deservedly
won by 39-3''
The coach of the National Side Mr. Niall Doherty, a straight talking
Irishman from Leinster, then announced the squad of players chosen
to play in the tournament. The group of 30 players includes 10 new
players who will travel from other countries to play.
'' Most of the boys coming from abroad '' said Mr. Doherty, ''have
found their own sponsors or paid for their own tickets and expenses
to come to Cyprus to represent their country. I applaud their
determination and their desire, and this is exactly the attitude of
the whole of the squad''
Mr. Doherty, who masterminded the historic defeat of the Greeks back
in March of this year, went on to say
''Countries within the bottom divisions of the European League, do
not at present, stand a chance of going to the World cup finals. It
takes decades of organization, development of the game from the
grass roots right through the various levels, to achieve a standard
that is good enough. If you look at the relative minnows of the
group stages of the world cup, teams like Portugal, Namibia, Canada,
The USA, they have been around for many many years. Even though they
were beaten by the stronger, more established teams of the world,
you could see that they were gaining in strength and experience and
were become more professional in their coaching and training.''
Mr. Doherty went on to say '' To be asked to play 3 tough
international games in 7 days is hard going for even the strongest
nations. With the squad of players I have at my disposal, and with
the determination of th |
