Under clear London skies and in front of a lively crowd, a newly assembled Cyprus U23s side edged a thrilling 38-31 victory over Eton Manor in a high-octane, full-blooded encounter.
Captained by Alex Georgiou (#147), with Joe Ridgewell (#157) and Mitchell Fielder (#149) as vice-captains, this was a squad brought together from across the UK and Cyprus, many meeting for the first time that very morning. Yet from the outset, leadership was shared, standards were set, and intent was unmistakable.
Preparation was purposeful. A structured training session, broken into focused blocks, ensured clarity of roles and alignment on the day’s plan. The match itself, split into four quarters with rolling changes, offered every player the platform to perform.
Fast Start, Early Statement
From the opening whistle, the tempo was relentless. Both sides traded heavy collisions and quick ball, setting the tone for what would become an open, attacking contest.
Midway through the first quarter, Cyprus struck first, and it was a moment of instinct and execution. Winning a scrum against the head in midfield, Captain Alex Georgiou linked with Michael Cottage, who reacted instantly, freeing Alex Thompson into space. With defenders closing and the touchline looming, Thompson showed composure to chip ahead and regather. As Eton Manor scrambled, Ridgewell thundered onto the ball to finish from close range. Charlie Panteli added the extras.

Eton Manor responded late in the quarter, applying sustained pressure to level proceedings.
Momentum Swings
Cyprus regained momentum early in the second quarter. From a lineout platform, Louie Petrides secured possession, and the Cypriots built patiently through the phases. A sharp break from Rico Lamb tore open the defensive line, with support arriving in waves. After slick interplay involving George Petrou and Luke Webber, Petrou powered back to his feet and crashed over for a deserved try.

But the home side hit back swiftly, capitalising on quick ball and lapses in defensive alignment to score twice and take the lead.
Cyprus responded again before the break. Disruption at the lineout from Louie Stephens-Foster turned over possession, and from broken play, Thompson once more came hunting. Cutting infield from his wing, he unleashed a signature arcing run to score on the opposite flank, narrowing the deficit at half time.
A Battle of Cohesion
Wholesale changes at the interval tested Cyprus’ cohesion. A newly formed combination took time to gel, and while opportunities presented themselves, execution just fell short. What followed was a gritty, defensive quarter, resilient, physical and uncompromising, as the scoreboard remained unchanged.
Final Quarter Firepower
The final quarter exploded into life.
With Eton Manor stretching their lead, Cyprus gathered under the posts. Words were exchanged, standards reinforced and the response was immediate.

Five metres out, Georgiou tapped quickly and drove forward. Webber, tireless throughout, was finally rewarded, bursting over from close range. Panteli’s excellent conversion from wide brought the sides level.
Moments later, Cyprus struck again. A sharp line from Alex Thompson, off a well-timed tip from Alex Linscer, saw him slice through and touch down under the posts. Panteli converted with ease.

Now in full flow, Cyprus delivered the decisive blow. From the restart, George Petrou claimed cleanly and surged forward, laying the platform. Panteli released Thompson once more, who shrugged off two defenders before accelerating clear, his pace and balance carving open the field as he completed a standout performance with a second try, putting daylight between the sides with Panteli converting.
Full-time score Eton Manor U23s 31 - 38 Cyprus U23s.

More Than a Result
This was more than a match.
It was 40 young Cypriots, many strangers just hours earlier, coming together to represent something bigger than themselves. By full time, they were no longer individuals, but a team.
What began as a conversation in an East London pub, “I think we’ve got 18 players”, has rapidly grown into a movement. A player pool now exceeding 50, and building real momentum.
The performance reflected that journey: raw at times, but full of energy, pride and promise.
A spectacle for the purist: fast, physical and unrelenting, but more importantly, a glimpse of what this group could become.
On behalf of the Cyprus Rugby Federation, thanks go to Eton Manor for their hospitality, our sponsors Novia Global Europe, KYPROCK and to all players, coaches and staff who made the day possible.
This is only the beginning …
Έλα Κύπρος!
