Cyprus Showcases Determination Against Malta in Season Opener

Malta secured a 27-8 victory over Cyprus at Tsirio Stadium in Limassol on Saturday 15 November 2025, in the opening round of the Rugby Europe Men's Conference. Despite the seemingly comfortable score line, the match was closely contested, with both sides showcasing physicality and determination before Malta pulled away in the final stages.

First Half: Tight Exchanges and Malta’s Early Advantage

The opening quarter saw both teams trading penalties, bringing the score to 3-3 as each side tested the opposition's defense. Malta drew first blood with a try in the 28th minute, when Caleb Bonello finished a driving maul to put the visitors ahead. Chris Dudman, Malta’s kicker, missed the conversion, leaving Malta with an 8-3 lead.

A costly Cypriot handling error under a high kick allowed Malta to extend their lead just minutes later, with Philip Ioffe capitalising for the second try. Dudman again failed to convert, but Malta entered half time with a 13-3 advantage, having exploited their opportunities more.

Second Half: Cyprus Strike, but Malta Finish Strong

Cyprus responded early in the second half. Alex Pantechis crossed the try line after a spell of Cypriot pressure, closing the gap to 13-8 and giving hope to the home supporters at Tsirio Stadium. However, Malta maintained composure and re-established control.

Bonello powered through for his second try of the day, this time with Dudman making no mistake from the tee, extending Malta’s cushion to 20-8. With fatigue setting in and Cyprus chasing the game, Malta exploited another driving maul to seal the win, with Thomas Holloway scoring the fourth try and Dudman adding the final conversion for a 27-8 result.

Key Performers and Turning Points

  • Caleb Bonello was pivotal for Malta, scoring two tries and setting the tone with physical carries.

  • Chris Dudman not only added points from the boot but contributed tactically with astute kicking.

  • For Cyprus, Alexander Pantechis’ try early in the second half was a highlight in an otherwise frustrating day for the Mouflons.

  • Malta’s ability to convert forward dominance, particularly from driving mauls, was decisive in the latter stages.

New Coaches and Caps for Cyprus

This match marked a significant milestone for Cyprus Rugby as it was the first international fixture under the guidance of new Head Coach Liam Dunseath and Assistant Coach James Peters. Bringing fresh perspectives and extensive coaching experience, the new leadership team set the tone for the season ahead. The game also witnessed seven players earning their first caps for the Mighty Mouflons, highlighting the blend of youth and experience being cultivated in the squad as Cyprus embarks on this new chapter in its rugby journey.

Match Summary

While Cyprus matched Malta's intensity and enjoyed some promising attacking phases, the visitors' superior conversion rate and late-game discipline saw them emerge as deserving winners. The result marks a triumphant start for Malta under their new head coach, Phil Pretorius, while Cyprus will look to regroup and address their set-piece defense ahead of their next outing against Andorra on Saturday 14 March 2026 in Cyprus.
